Machine room or machine-room-less?
Traditional traction lifts keep the motor and controller in a room above the shaft. Machine-room-less (MRL) lifts place a compact gearless machine inside the shaft itself, which saves space on the roof and often suits new buildings well. Both are good options. Safety standards and local rules
According to BIS, IS 17900, the new Indian lift safety standard harmonised with EN 81-20 and EN 81-50, became mandatory for new installations from 22 December 2025. It places strong emphasis on unintended car movement protection (UCMP), ascending car overspeed protection (ACOP) and ARD. Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have also brought in lift laws covering registration and regular maintenance.
