A hydraulic goods elevator uses an oil-driven cylinder to push a heavy-duty platform up and lower it gently down. It is a practical, strong lift for moving stock, sacks, cartons, machines and trolleys between two to four floors. Because it needs no machine room above the shaft and very little headroom, it fits many existing godowns, shops and workshops where a traction lift would be hard to install. Eldeal Engineers supplies, installs and services hydraulic goods lifts across Bihar and Eastern Uttar Pradesh.
How a hydraulic goods lift works
An electric motor drives a pump inside a power unit. The pump pushes hydraulic oil into a cylinder, and the cylinder's ram raises the car. To come down, a valve lets oil flow back to the tank in a controlled way, and the weight of the car brings it down smoothly. There are no heavy counterweights or overhead machines. The power unit sits in a small room or cabinet, usually next to the shaft on the lowest floor.
Direct-acting
The cylinder sits under or beside the car and pushes it directly. Simple and robust, best for short travel.
Indirect (roped) hydraulic
The cylinder works with ropes and pulleys to double the travel of the ram. Useful when the building has more height to cover.
Where hydraulic goods elevators work best
- Godowns and warehouses with a mezzanine or first-floor storage.
- Wholesale and retail shops in busy bazaars that store stock upstairs.
- Small factories and workshops moving raw material and finished goods between two or three levels.
- Cold stores and rice or flour mills handling sacks and bags every day.
- Existing buildings where adding a machine room on the roof is not possible.
Typical hydraulic goods elevator configurations
These are typical industry ranges and are indicative only. Final capacity and platform size depend on what you load and how you load it.
| Typical use | Capacity (kg) | Travel | Typical speed | Loading |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shop or small godown | 500–1000 | 2–3 stops | 0.15–0.3 m/s | Hand trolley |
| Warehouse or mill | 1000–2000 | 2–3 stops | 0.15–0.3 m/s | Pallet truck |
| Workshop or light factory | 2000–3000+ | 2–4 stops | 0.15–0.5 m/s | Pallet truck or small machines |
Advantages and limits
A hydraulic lift is a strong fit for low-rise buildings, but it is not right for every job. Here is an honest comparison.
Advantages
- Handles heavy loads with a compact power unit.
- Needs little headroom and no roof-top machine room.
- Loads place less stress on the building walls because the cylinder carries much of the weight to the pit.
- Smooth, controlled descent even with a full load.
- Fewer moving parts in the shaft, which keeps routine maintenance simple.
Limits
- Best for low-rise travel, usually up to about four stops.
- Slower than a traction lift, which is fine for goods but not ideal for busy passenger traffic.
- Oil temperature and quality need checking, especially in hot Bihar summers.

Pit, power unit and building checks
Before we quote, our engineer checks the ground conditions for the pit, where the power unit will sit, and the route for the oil lines. In areas with a high water table, as in parts of Bihar close to rivers, the pit must be well waterproofed. A dry, ventilated power unit room also keeps oil temperature under control.
Safety features
- Rupture valve on the cylinder line to stop the car descending suddenly if a hose fails.
- Overload sensor with voice prompt to prevent running over the rated load.
- Door interlocks so the car only moves with landing doors closed.
- Emergency lowering so the car can be brought down to a landing during a power cut.
- Alarm, emergency light and intercom for the operator travelling with goods.
Keeping your hydraulic lift healthy
Most problems with hydraulic lifts come from oil leaks, worn seals or dirty oil. Regular checks catch these early and prevent downtime in the middle of a delivery. Our lift maintenance service covers oil level and condition, seals, valves, doors and electrical safety. If your goods lift has stopped working, our repair team offers 24/7 support.
