A capsule elevator, also called a panoramic or glass lift, is built to be seen. Instead of a closed steel box, passengers ride in a cabin with one or more glass walls and look out over an atrium, a lobby or the city outside. For hotels, malls, showrooms and high-end homes in Bihar and Eastern Uttar Pradesh, a capsule lift is both a way to move people and a strong visual statement. Eldeal Engineers designs, supplies and installs capsule elevators with the same V3F drive and safety features as our standard lifts.

Why buildings choose a capsule elevator

  • First impressions: a glass lift in a lobby is often the first thing a guest or shopper notices.
  • Natural light: the cabin and shaft let light through, so interiors feel open instead of boxed in.
  • Less closed-in feeling: passengers who dislike small closed spaces often feel more comfortable with a view.
  • Draws people upward: in malls and multi-level showrooms, a visible lift encourages visitors to explore upper floors.
  • Brand value: for hotels and banquet halls, it adds a premium touch that photographs well.

Common capsule lift designs

Semi-circular capsule

The classic shape. A curved glass front with a flat back that runs along the guide rails. It suits atriums and building façades where the lift is viewed from one side.

Square or rectangular panoramic

Flat glass panels on one, two or three sides. Easier to fit into standard shafts and often a little more economical than curved glass.

Glass shaft with glass cabin

The whole lift, shaft and car, is enclosed in glass and steel framing. Popular in stairwells of premium homes and in open lobbies.

External façade lift

Fixed on the outside of the building so riders see the street or skyline. This needs careful planning for weather, sun and cleaning access.

Safety in a glass lift

A capsule lift must be as safe as any enclosed lift. We use laminated safety glass for cabin panels, so it holds together if it is ever cracked. Every car includes an Automatic Rescue Device (ARD), a door light curtain, an overload sensor with voice prompt, an intercom, an alarm and emergency lighting. The V3F drive gives gentle starts and stops, which matters more when passengers are watching the floors go by.

New lift installations must now follow IS 17900, which BIS made mandatory from 22 December 2025. It is harmonised with EN 81-20 and EN 81-50 and covers features such as UCMP, ACOP and ARD. Please confirm current requirements with your architect and local authority.

Capsule lifts for hotels and hospitality

Hospitality is where capsule elevators make the biggest difference. Our work with hotels such as Samridhi Hotel & Resorts in Sasaram and Kashi Residency Hotel in Varanasi has shown us what guests value: a quiet, smooth ride, a clean well-lit cabin and a lift that is always working. A panoramic lift in a hotel atrium or restaurant wing also works well for weddings and events. Our article on capsule elevators for hotels and malls covers planning tips in more detail.

Things to plan early

  • Structure: the building or steel frame must carry the rails and glass loads.
  • Sunlight and heat: in Bihar summers, a fully exposed glass car can heat up. Tinted glass or ventilation helps.
  • Cleaning: plan safe access to clean both sides of the glass.
  • Look of the machinery: since the lift is on show, cables and rails should be neat and well finished.

A capsule lift has more visible parts than a standard lift, so regular care keeps it looking good. We recommend a lift AMC from day one. If you have an older lift you would like to upgrade to a glass cabin, see our lift modernisation service.

How much does a capsule elevator cost?

A capsule lift usually costs more than a standard enclosed lift because of the glass, the finish and the structural work. The shape, number of glass sides, floors and capacity all affect the price. We give a clear quotation after a free site survey.

Is a glass elevator safe?

Yes. Capsule lifts use laminated safety glass and the same safety systems as any passenger lift, including ARD, light curtain, overload sensor, intercom and alarm. Regular maintenance keeps them safe and looking good.

Can a capsule lift be installed outside a building?

Yes, external façade lifts are possible. They need planning for rain, sun, heat and cleaning access. Our engineer will check the structure and suggest the right design.

Does a glass lift get hot in summer?

A fully exposed glass car can warm up in direct sun. Tinted glass, shading and cabin ventilation keep it comfortable. We discuss this during design, especially for external lifts in Bihar and UP.

What is the difference between a capsule and a panoramic elevator?

The terms are often used together. A capsule lift usually has a curved, rounded glass front, while a panoramic lift may have flat glass on one or more sides. Both give passengers a view.
